Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (escc) is one of the causes of death from cancer. several genetic variants in the 7q21.12 region have been recognized to be associated with the risk of several cancers. here we explored the relationship between a genetic variant in multiple drug resistance (mdr) gene, rs1128503 in 297 subjects with escc
Methods
Data in computer-based patient dossiers (cprs) of mashhad university of medical sciences were applied to identify escc patients, between july 2004 to september 2013. ninety three escc patients and two hunderd and twenty-four healthy subjects were used. dna was extracted, followed by genotyping. overall survival (os) and desease-free survival (dfs) curves were analyzed via kaplan–meier method, log-rank tests and cox model
Results
Patients with escc had a higher frequency of a tt+ct genotype than subjects in the control group. also tt genotype was associated with shorter os (e.g., tt genotype: 40.072± 6.885 months, vs. ct+cc: 43.088± 5.714 months)
Conclusion
We found a relationship between a genetic marker in mdr gene and os of escc patients. further studies in a larger population and multi center setting in escc patients are warranted to validate emerging marker
