Prevalence of septicemia in intasive care unit and internal medicine wards patients in rajaee hospital of karaj

Abstract


Introduction

Septicemia or blood infections is one of the most important causes of death in patients hospitalized in different parts of hospitals and considered as an emergency medical . treatment of these patients should be done at the hospital or even in the intensive care unit. blood culture is the most common method for identifying systemic bacterial infections.

Methods

This study was performed on 1500 patients with septicemia suspicious symptoms admitted to shahid rajaee hospital. specimenes were collected for blood culture. the bacteria grown in blood cultures were isolated and identified using conventional bacteriological methods. antibiotic susceptibility test was performed using disc diffusion method according to the clinique and laboratory standards institute (clsi) guidelines and the results were analyzed.

Results

Of the 1500 blood culture samples, 60 cases of blood culture were positive. 30 cases (50%) of staphylococcus coagulase negative, 13 cases (21.66%) staphylococcus coagulase positive, 2 cases (3.33%) enterococcus, 2 cases (33.3%) streptococcus, 3 cases (5%)enterobacter , 4 cases (6.66%) escherichia coli, 2 cases (3.33%) pseudomonas, 1 case (1.66%) acinetobacter, 2 cases (33.3%) yersinia, 1 case (1.66%) klebsiella consisted of the whole positive culture.

Conclusion

: this study showed that coagulase negative staphylococci were the most common isolated species among positive blood culture.
