Benefical effects of hydroalcoholic extract of fenugreek seeds on some biochemical factors and oxidative stress in high-fructose diet-induced metabolic syndrome in rats
Background: fenugreek (trigonella foenum graecum) is a traditional herbal plant. seeds of fenugreek have several properties, including hypoglycaemic, hypolipidaemic and antioxidant this study evaluates the effect of hydroalcoholic extract of fenugreek seeds (hefs) on insulin resistance, dyslipidemia and oxidative stress in high-fructose diet-induced metabolic syndrome .
Methods
48 male wistar rats (150 - 200 gr) were randomized into six groups (a-f) . a-c groups were normal rats and d-f groups were metabolic syndrome rats. a and d groups that did not receive the extract of fenugreek. b and e groups that received low-dose hefs (100 mg/kg body weight) and c and f groups high-dose hefs (200 mg/kg body weight) for 28 days. to develop a metabolic syndrome rat model by induction of fructose drinking water (fdw 20%) in male wistar rats. animal blood samples were collected to measure biochemical parameters including fbs, cholestrol, hdl, ldl, tg and antioxidant parameters.
Results
Compared to control rats, hydroalcoholic extract of fenugreek
significantly reduced fbs, cholestrol, tg, ldl and mda level in all extract received groups (p<0.05). it was also observed that there was a significant increase in gpx, cat, tca levels (p<0.05). these changes were dose-dependent.
Conclusion
Findings of the present study showed the beneficial effects of fenugreek seeds in improving dislipidemia and attenuating metabolic syndrome and oxidative stress in fructose-fed rats.
