Investigating sexual disorders in women with seizures: a systematic review

Introduction: Seizures are known as the second neurological complication. According to a study, the prevalence of seizures in Iran is 5%, and its rate in women of reproductive age was estimated between 0.3% and 0.7%. This complication is one of the most important chronic neurological diseases that can affect sexual performance due to the nature of the disease and the use of anticonvulsant drugs and its potential impact on the reproductive and sexual hormones of convulsive women with many reproductive diseases, irregular menstruation and Infertility and sexual problems are encountered. As a result, this review study was conducted with the aim of investigating sexual disorders in women with seizures.
Methods: This review is based on a search in the scientific sites Pubmed, Embase, MEDLINE. sciencedirect. SidSCOPUS and Google Scholar search engine with the keywords seizure and epilepsy and sexual disorders of women and their English equivalent have been done during the years 1996 to 2018. The number of initial articles was 40 and the number of final articles was 18. The articles reviewed were in the descriptive group. They have been dating for a while.
Results: By examining the results of the studies conducted in this period, sexual disorders that had a high prevalence in convulsive women include: vaginal dryness, delayed orgasm, decreased libido, dyspareunia, premature ejaculation, delayed ejaculation. Among them, vaginal dryness has the highest percentage and ejaculation delay has the lowest percentage. Of course, the percentage of these disorders is influenced by factors such as age, living environment, time of marriage, education level, and the number of seizures per month.
Conclusion: According to the results obtained from the present study, it is therefore suggested that health service providers take steps to improve women's health with planning and interventions such as screening, counseling, training and referral to relevant specialists.
